The representative of Marea Azul, Lourdes Rodríguez Badillo, denounces that the works in an over-explored area are for economic reasons, and the dolphin zone in the Flora and Fauna Protection Area “Laguna de Términos” is not protected.
By Ronny Aguilar CITY OF CARMEN, Cam. July 15, 2015.- When a dead juvenile dolphin appeared in the North Beach area of Isla del Carmen, Lourdes Rodríguez Badillo, legal representative of Marea Azul, assured that it is due to the three-dimensional seismological surveys that Petróleos Mexicanos is carrying out in the Campeche Sound. This Wednesday morning, the marine mammal arrived on the coast of Ciudad del Carmen, for which reason the activist and environmental defender pointed out that they are the consequences of the exploratory studies, in search of hydrocarbons, by Pemex, without there being a regulation of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), nor an investigation by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa). “It is the three-dimensional seismic prospecting, which they have already started again, and in an area that is over-explored and where they continue to do it just for economic reasons and it is surprising that they do not need an Environmental Impact Statement, in an area of dolphins, in a season when turtles are close to the coast, it is truly terrible, it is a brutal devastation in water, on land, in wetlands and on the coast and in the mangroves”, he expressed. Rodríguez Badillo indicated that so far this year, there are six dead dolphins and six dead turtles, which have appeared on the coasts of Ciudad del Carmen, or at least, those that they have registered as Blue Tide, this without there is an investigation by the authorities.
“The stranding networks have become gravediggers, because they are doing absolutely nothing to determine the causes of these deaths, they just arrive, measure and bury them, they don’t even worry about freezing a corpse and sending it to a research center ”, he added. “It is true that there are cases that the dolphins, due to the sun, their skin does not resist and they enter a state of decomposition very quickly, but this is not the case of the specimen that appeared today, it was in good condition,” he said. On the other hand, the environmentalist expressed the need for the authority to evacuate boats from the city boardwalk, just at the height of the Zacatal Bridge, since it is affecting a natural area, which is the habitat of dolphins and other species, just to reduce economic costs to vessels.
“Historically, Laguna de Términos has been a refuge area for dolphins and inexplicably it is concessioned to the API, which is a SA DE CV, which should be free of boats, to be a refuge for dolphins within this protection reserve. of flora and fauna, because in the Gulf of Mexico, between contamination and seismic prospecting, it has nowhere to take refuge and Laguna de Términos is full of nets and I think that the mouth of the lagoon would be a good refuge within its habitat and within a reserve of flora and fauna and the management plan says that this mouth must be free for them”, he recalled. “We need these boats to be placed in an area where they do not impact, because the reason why they are parked so close in that area of the boardwalk, the dolphin area, is purely economic, because if they are far away, they spend more fuel, I I believe that nature cannot continue to subsidize this type of absurd justifications”, he pointed out.
