“Ghaпim Al Mυftah came into this world in 2002, carrying with him a congenital degenerative spinal syndrome known as Caudal Regression Syndrome (CDS). This rare condition results in individuals being born without a lower body. As a consequence, movement relies entirely on the upper body, given the underdeveloped spine and hips.
Upon receiving the diagnosis of Ghaпim’s birth defects and the bleak survival prognosis, many advised his mother to consider termination, believing it would spare both the family and Ghaпim himself from a potentially arduous life. Nevertheless, Ghaпim’s parents remained resolute in their decision to welcome their baby. They quietly pledged to be both the right leg and the left leg for their child. Surrounded by an abundance of parental love, baby Ghaпim entered the world.
Traditionally, Ghaпim would have relied heavily on a wheelchair, but he was determined to walk on his hands as much as possible. His philosophy revolves around making the most of what one is born with, rather than fixating on physical limitations.
Similar to numerous other children with disabilities, Ghaпim faced ridicule, bullying, and social isolation from his peers. However, his mother encouraged him to confide in his classmates, fostering understanding about his health condition and challenging societal perceptions of disadvantaged groups. He mastered the art of surmounting obstacles by focusing on the positive aspects and honing his leadership skills. Positivity served as the cornerstone for his gradual transformation into an outstanding individual. Surpassing even his family’s expectations, he captivated everyone with his radiant smile, unyielding confidence, and generous personality.
At the age of 16, in 2018, Ghaпim became a speaker at TEDxQatarUniversity, sharing insights into his syndrome and detailing his journey of overcoming challenges with optimism. He firmly believes that physical limitations do not confine vision and leadership. Consequently, Ghaпim emerged as an inspirational speaker and an influential figure with over 3 million followers on social media platforms.
Currently pursuing a major in political science at Loughborough University, Ghaпim aspires to become a diplomat, aiming to wield a profound voice and influence despite his disability. He actively engages in adventure sports such as scuba diving, skateboarding, mountain climbing, and even soccer, playing fairly with shoes on his hands like any other regular player. Setting his sights high, he conquered Mount Jebel Shams, the highest peak in the Hajar range, with ambitions of one day conquering Everest.
Despite his lack of a lower body, Ghaпim enthusiastically participates in various sports activities, utilizing what he has to the fullest.
Enduring numerous mental challenges, Ghaпim has also faced multiple physical difficulties, undergoing surgeries and various medical interventions. However, the physical pain did not dampen Ghaпim’s ambitions. It is his tenacious spirit that has won the hearts and admiration of millions of Qataris.
Advancing in his career from a young age, Ghaпim has achieved numerous remarkable milestones. In 2009, he received the Unsung Hero award from the 21st Century Leaders Foundation. Subsequently, he continued to amass prestigious titles such as peace ambassador, ROTA goodwill ambassador, and brand ambassador for Qatar National Finance Authority (QFC). He was also appointed the official spokesperson for the United Nations. Ghaпim’s recent volunteer efforts have been widely appreciated by everyone.
He refuses to let any of his life goals be limited by his physical limitations.
In the business realm, Ghaпim exhibits surprising organizational and administrative abilities. At present, Ghaпim Al Mυftah holds the distinction of being the youngest entrepreneur in Qatar, having founded a chain of 5-star ice cream shops called Gharissa Ice Cream, a company headquartered in Qatar. His Gharissa ice cream brand has been franchised, and through this venture, he aims to expand his products internationally and across the Gulf Arab region.
He doesn’t perceive an entrepreneur merely as someone who establishes a company; rather, he sees them as someone who pioneers initiatives, takes business risks, and creates new employment opportunities for the future, regardless of the challenges involved. This ethos stems from critical thinking, innovation, and continuous improvement—a true entrepreneurial spirit that Ghaпim embodies.
Commenting on the productivity of vulnerable groups in the labor market, Ghaпim is confident that individuals with disabilities can generate outstanding value for society if given deserving opportunities. Not just resilient in life, Ghaпim is also a stalwart warrior in his professional endeavors.
“As a FIFA World Cup Ambassador, I want to convey a message of hope, harmony, peace, and unity for all humanity,” he expressed during the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup.”
